My story
My life was too big for the box.
I was born in Finland. I moved to Malaysia at twelve. After that came Bangkok, Tokyo, New York, Singapore and Sydney. Seven years at Nokia, then IT consulting, then nine years at Royal Bank of Scotland. Twenty years of leading software delivery and running other people's programmes. And the whole time, on the side, by choice, I was designing buildings. I founded Decodence in Sydney in 2006. In 2010 I bought a derelict grain mill at silent auction. It ended up on the BBC.
In early 2024 I was told I couldn't work from outside the UK. Same work. Same results. Just not from where I wanted to be. That was the moment I understood my life and my location were being controlled by a job title. By the end of the year I'd decided to go. The redundancy offer came after the decision, not instead of it.
It cost me. The money. The security. The comfort of knowing what tomorrow looks like. I'd do it again tomorrow.
So here's why I'm the person for this. I've done it the way you'd have to do it: around a full-time job, without lifting a tool, deciding who each building was for before I spent a penny. I don't teach theory. I'd honestly rather be on site. But nobody was coming to save me, and nobody is coming to save you either. So let's get going.
